sam burns

After breaking the 72-hole record at the Country Club of Jackson, Sam Burns is aiming to win the Sanderson Farms Championship for the second time in a row. As we get closer to the first round, he is by much the betting favorite.

The PGA Tour took a small break after the Fortinet Championship to attend a special event at the Presidents Cup before returning to normal programming this weekend with the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, MS.

After a good weekend in 2021, Sam Burns won the tournament and is the betting favorite to win it again this year.

Notes on the field

Given that Burns, the betting favorite, is the highest-ranked player visiting Jackson (12th in the most recent Official World Golf Ranking), there isn’t a lot of sheer star power in the field. Sebastian Munoz and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, the other two players in the field, were both involved in the Presidents Cup last weekend. He is one of them. Munoz (+2,900 to win) won this competition in 2019, which also happened to be his last victory on the circuit.

The 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship favorites

Sam Burns | +1,100

Burns is heavily favored against his opponents, with no one else earning odds less than +2,200. It’s no surprise, though, given that the 26-year-old is coming off an outstanding PGA Tour season in which he placed 24th at the TOUR Championship and won three events, the first of which was the recent Sanderson Farms Championship.

Burns has held the 72-hole record of 266 since the event relocated to the Country Club of Jackson in 2014. Burns did not compete in the Fortinet Championship two weeks ago, but burns was a member of the United States’ victorious team in the Presidents Cup, but he did not win any of his matches.

Sahith Theegala | +2,200

Theegala, on the other hand, competed in the Fortinet Championship and performed well, particularly early in the competition. The 24-year-old shot 67 and 69 on Thursday and Friday, respectively, to finish T6 with a -11.

He finished T8 in last year’s Sanderson Farms Championship, his first Top-10 result on the PGA Tour. Again, he got out to a fast start, shooting 64 to take a one-stroke lead over eventual runner-up Nick Watney. Theegala is still searching for his first PGA Tour victory.

Russell Henley | +2,500

Henley didn’t begin competing until October of last year, but he made a quick impression, placing in the Top 25 in eight of his first 11 events. The 33-year-old hasn’t raced in a tournament since winning the 2017 Shell Houston Open, and he hasn’t made an appearance since placing T35 at the BMW Championship over a month ago.

Longshots to win the Sanderson Farms Championship in 2022

Davis Riley | +4,500

To conclude the 2021-22 season, Theegala was a step ahead of Riley in the PGA Tour rookie rankings, placing 28th in the FedExCup and Riley 35th. Riley, on the other hand, earned six Top-10 finishes and competed in three fewer races.

Riley, 25, is from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and might be a local favorite. He got off to a bad start this year by failing to make the cut at the Fortinet Championship, but the writing was on the wall when he shot 78 in the first round, which was worse than all but three total rounds from the 2021-22 season. He did not make the cut here a year ago, but he gained momentum from March to June on his way to an outstanding rookie season on tour.

Justin Suh | +8,000

Suh, who is 25 years old, has a lot to prove. He acquired full PGA Tour membership by winning the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Championship and finishing first in the season-long points competition. Suh has the makings of a legitimate rookie-of-the-year contender. He again missed the cut at the Fortinet Championship, but his performances on the Korn Ferry Tour speak for themselves.

He’s a real dark horse in this race, but a breakthrough might be on the horizon.
