Rory McIlroy feels his major drought is coming to an end after finishing in the top five at the 122nd US Open
Rory McIlroy finished the week four strokes behind Matt Fitzpatrick after finishing runner-up at The Masters and seventh at the PGA Championship.
Rory McIlroy, who entered the final day three strokes behind the lead, got off to the perfect start with a birdie on the first hole. However, his eventful final round of 69 had a mix of five birdies and four bogeys.
Rory McIlroy was happy with his effort but disappointed he didn’t go any closer to securing a second victory in as many weeks. The Northern Irishman ended four shots down in tied-fifth as Matt Fitzpatrick claimed his first major triumph.

“Yes, there are certain advantages to it. I performed well enough to have a chance of winning. I didn’t finish the work, but I’m closer than I’ve been in a long time, which is a wonderful thing.”
McIlroy rolled in from 25 feet at the first, then made up for a bogey at the third with a 20-foot birdie at the fourth, but then lost another stroke at the driveable next after opting to putt from outside the green.
McIlroy bogeyed the sixth, then bogeyed the eighth and failed to capitalize on the par-five eighth, leaving him five shots behind the lead at the turn, and any modest dreams of a late big push were dashed when he missed from nine feet to save par at the 11th.
McIlroy returned to the top-five and within three strokes of the lead with back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 16th, before getting up and down from a greenside bunker to save par on the 16th and then squandering birdie chances on the next two holes.
McIlroy will compete in his fourth event in four weeks at the Travelers Championship before getting two weeks off before competing in The 150th Open at St Andrews next month.
McIlroy said, “A bit of a roller coaster on the front nine, bogeys and birdies.” “We’re off to a good start. This week seemed to have a couple of holes that were my enemy, the third being one of them.
“It wasn’t so simple out there. Obviously, there were a few solid scores, but I needed a 65 or 66 to get the job done today, and I wasn’t quite on it enough. I still believe I played well and had a respectable round of golf, but not well enough to compete.
“Another top-five finish in a major.” I suppose it doesn’t really matter. Yes, the game is available. I have one more appearance in Hartford next week before heading to the Open Championship.
“I’ll take two weeks off before the Open to recover and prepare, and I’m looking forward to it.” My game is in terrific form once again. I have one more opportunity this year to acquire that major.”
