With an 11-1-1 record in 13 matches, the United States has dominated the Presidents Cup since the first competition in 1994. The American team is the clear favorite going into the competition in 2022, and things don’t seem to be changing.
The Presidents Cup will take place from Thursday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 25 for the first time since 2019.
The two teams will face each other 30 times throughout the course of the four-day match play competition. There are twelve golfers on each team.

Team USA enters this competition as the clear favorite with Davis Love III as captain. Despite the difficulties facing skipper Trevor Immelman, the international team still boasts several outstanding players on its roster.

The US was thrown a curveball when Will Zalatoris was unable to participate due to a back issue. The International squad, however, is missing three players: Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, and Anirban Lahiri, who were ruled ineligible after joining LIV Golf.
Team USA won 16-14 in 2019, but will not be returning Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, or Bryce DeChambeau, who are all currently on the LIV Golf tour.
Team USA
The United States is regarded the betting favorite entering the tournament by a wide margin, which is not surprising. Scheffler, Cantlay, Schauffele, Thomas, and Morikawa are among the five players on the squad that are presently ranked in the OWGR Top 10. It would have been six if Zalatoris had been able to play.
Kevin Kisner, the team’s lowest-ranked golfer, is rated 26th in the world, higher than six of the ten players on the International squad.
On paper, the United States has a significant edge. In 2022, Scheffler and Thomas both won major titles, something no one from the Internationals can claim.
Internationals
Considering their status as substantial underdogs, the International squad is far from anonymous. Matsuyama and Scott are both previous Masters winners, while the rest of the squad has had a successful PGA Tour season.
Nonetheless, the teams seem to be highly disparate. Losing the defending Open Championship champion, Cam Smith, just adds to the chasm. Given Team USA’s pedigree, the odds difference should be significantly greater than it is now. That is not to dismiss the Internationals, but to highlight how the star power is more visible on the other side.
History was already against the International team, who had only won once (in 1998) since the event’s start in 1994.
